About The Film
NEW YORK CAT CRISIS (2026) is a feature-length documentary about the overpopulation of cats across the five boroughs of New York City.
As advocates, rescuers, and animal welfare organizations call for the City of New York to invest in accessible low-cost veterinary care, this film explores the existing systems that have allowed the overpopulation of cats across the city.

With limited staff and volunteers, rescue organizations provide essential service to humanely reduce and maintain the outdoor cat population and improve the quality of life in their communities. Many also provide support for independent rescuers by sharing spay/neuter appointments, holding space, foster networks, food pantries, and adoption listings.
The veterinary clinics listed above consist of both independent veterinarians and 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue clinics. Rescue clinics specialize in shelter care, as well as high volume spay/neuter surgeries. Independent veterinarians are unaffiliated with corporate or private equity owners or investors, giving them the freedom to treat rescue cats, provide discounted services to rescuers, and prioritize patients over profits. Both of these veterinary models are crucial to solving the cat crisis, please consider supporting the non-profit clinics with your donations and the independent veterinarians through your own patronage as a client or referral.

Independent Rescuers

Independent rescuers are not incorporated as a non-profit or other organization type. These individuals often rescue and manage cats in their own building, block, or neighborhood and work at their own personal cost to provide medical care, space, and food. Rescue clinics are a lifeline to these rescuers, however simple medical cases can still cost hundreds of dollars and more complicated cases or dental issues will quickly cost thousands.
While independent rescuers cannot provide a tax deductible donation, their efforts are essential and deserving of support. In some cases, a non-profit that has helped a rescuer is requested to be the recipient of donations in lieu of the rescuer themselves.
